The nature of natural pearls

They are formed in the tissue of a freshwater or saltwater mollusk - most commonly an oyster or mussel. Therefore, since their cultivation in 1893 in Japan, natural pearls have been grown in special farms where the optimal conditions for their formation are created. Despite the help of man, however, these remain true pearls, as the work of the mollusk is carried out by him alone.
The colors of natural pearls
Many people believe that natural pearls are always white. This is due to the prevalence of their predominantly this hue historically - white pearls have historically evoked a variety of associations that have enhanced their value. At different stages in human history and in different places around the world, they have been thought of as angel tears or dragon particles, and often attributed miraculous properties.
Today, however, we know that natural pearls can be white, but this is not necessarily the case. In fact, different shades of white are more popular now as they are perceived to be more versatile. Most colors of natural pearls are pastel, meaning they are not very intense because of the specifics of the mother-of-pearl that shapes them. Black and grey are very characteristic of them, and both colors have a peculiar luster resembling graphite.
